The Indirect Self-Portrait

What stories do our belongings hold? Many artists struggle with self-portraits. Using the power of the photographic frame, students will create indirect self-portraits using their surroundings, fragments of self or objects. We will review a brief history of self-portrait photography, discuss our individual definitions of self-portraiture, and review basic camera settings and visual elements (such as composition, color, line, rhythm, movement, form, shape, space, etc). A camera with manual settings is recommended, but not required.

Mindful Expressive Arts Workshop

Exploring expressive arts, writing, somatic movement and meditation in a supportive, non-judgmental community. The practices help enhance internal awareness, self-expression, and mind-body integration. Many participants report feeling less anxious and a greater sense of ease. No experience required.

Previous Mindful Art and Yoga Workshops:

Somatic Yoga Workshop

This 1-day gentle and therapeutic yoga workshop will explore relieving tension that often causes neck and back pain. Somatic Yoga is not a different style of yoga, but rather a therapeutic style of movement. Somatic Yoga re-wires neural pathways and may allow for greater ease of movement and decreased pain.

SOMATIC YOGA AND EXPRESSIVE WRITING

Have you ever said (or thought) that you're not flexible enough to do yoga? Do you need time and space to release the stresses of your day? Do you feel like you're holding tension in your body or mind? Come release chronic tension, turn inward and find more ease through gentle somatic movements and therapeutic yoga, and reclaim your voice through expressive writing in a safe, non-judgmental environment (optional sharing).

Somatic-based yoga has been shown to help alleviate chronic tension and pain by re-wiring the neural pathways in our brain. Some participants have experienced improved sleep, decreased anxiety and depression, decreased chronic pain and stiffness, and a greater range of motion and ease in their movements with consistent practice. Expressive writing can also help improve feelings of empowerment, connection, and may calm the central nervous system and alleviate stress.

RESTORATIVE YOGA

SOMATIC YOGA

Somatic Yoga is a combination of gentle Somatic Movements, Hatha Yoga, breath-work and meditation that is available to every(body). These subtle and therapeutic-informed movements can help re-educate the way our brain senses and moves muscles. Majority of Somatic Yoga practices are done in a supine position (lying on the ground), and many participants experience: reduced chronic pain and headaches, improved sleep and mood, increased awareness, and a greater sense of self-acceptance and ease.

THERAPEUTIC YOGA WALL

Based on BKS Iyengar's principals of alignment, the yoga wall is used as a prop to deepen asana by opening and creating spaces in the body using therapeutic techniques. You will learn how the body aligns in postures with added support and gain a deeper awareness of how the body should feel while staying safe and avoiding misalignment. Also great for restoring spine health.
