Expanded Bio | A few words from Cynthia:

cynthia-hauk

I have always had a strong interest in cultivating awareness and creative self-expression through art and movement. While I was an artist at a young age, my journey with Hatha yoga began in 2003. In 2010, after being diagnosed and treated for cancer, my exploration deepened with Restorative Yoga, Reiki and SoulCollage® (an intuitive-based expressive arts collage and journaling process developed by Art Therapist, Seena Frost). Beginning in 2013, I discovered the somatic-based trauma work of Peter Levine, studied SomaSoul®: Somatic Expressive Therapy with Dan Leven and Trauma research with Bessel Van der Kolk. A consistent practice of art and trauma-sensitive yoga offered me a safe haven; a space I could return to and call "home."

As a wanderlust-infused artist and yogi, I earned my Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Studio Arts (Florence, Italy), and Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts (Boston, MA). I have been a professional artist since 2004 and began teaching in 2006. I am a certified Yoga Teacher in a variety of styles (including Restorative Yoga, Somatic Expressive Therapy, Trauma-sensitive Yoga, Expressive Arts and Yoga, Mindfulness Meditation, and Yoga Nidra).

My current teachings are infused with creative expressive art explorations, calming guided visualizations and breathing techniques, poetic language, and mindfulness exercises to help you explore your own experience and felt sense. I offer a trauma-sensitive approach that can help calm the central nervous system, enhance self-awareness and self-regulation, and empower students to reclaim their voice creatively.

I am passionate about sharing these practices in an accessible way for every(body), and am interested in how each of us can embody compassion and equanimity both on and off the mat. I also enjoy offering expressive arts and yoga to under-served populations (such as those with a history of trauma, homelessness, women and youth, etc). In Jan 2014, I participated in a one-month artist residency in the Himalayas in India (collaboratively offering art, yoga, and documentary photography in slums and schools for under-served youth), and was deeply moved by the the positive impacts this had on women and children in the slums and villages of Northern India. For one year in Mar 2014, I lived and volunteered at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health (one of the leading yoga retreat centers in the United States), and offered Art and Yoga based workshops to peers and staff on the FLOW schedule, and assisted Restorative Yoga Retreats there annually. I’ve taught at a variety of art and yoga studios, art galleries, community centers, adult education centers, and retreat centers worldwide (including Colorado, Southwestern United States, and Spain).
