In our busy world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. We move from one task to the next and forget to care for ourselves in meaningful ways. That’s why in this blog, I’m so excited to share a mindful art practice called Compassion Circles. This activity brings together simple art, reflection, and mindfulness to help you feel more calm, connected, and supported.
Whether you’re brand new to art or have been creating for years, Compassion Circles give you a chance to pause, check in with yourself, and create from a place of kindness. It’s one of the simplest and most powerful tools I use for emotional growth and daily self-care.
compassion circles for self-care in a fast-paced world
Life can be unpredictable. It’s easy to get swept up in everything we need to do and forget how we feel. But when we slow down and notice the present moment, we create space for healing. This is what mindfulness helps us do. It teaches us to be aware of our thoughts, feelings, and needs without judgment.
Practicing presence means checking in with yourself. It might be as simple as breathing deeply or noticing what emotions are present. These moments of awareness are powerful. They help us reconnect with ourselves and build emotional strength.
Compassion Circles offer a creative and gentle way to return to presence. They encourage you to reflect on how you’ve been caring for yourself. Small things like sipping tea, taking a walk, or choosing rest all become part of your creative check-in.
What Are Compassion Circles?
Compassion Circles are a type of mandala and mindful art practice I created. You start by drawing a circle. Then, you fill it with colors, shapes, or marks that reflect your current feelings or recent self-care moments.
This practice is not about creating something perfect. It’s about making space for your emotions and honoring the ways you care for yourself. As you draw, you connect with what you need. You begin to notice how you’re really doing.
Each Compassion Circle becomes a small act of love. It helps you build a habit of checking in and being kind to yourself, even on the hard days.
Why Self-Compassion Is So Important
Many of us are kind to others but hard on ourselves. We push through stress and ignore our needs. Self-compassion helps shift that pattern. It means offering yourself the same care and understanding you’d give to a friend.
Creating a Compassion Circle is a simple way to practice self-compassion. You give yourself permission to slow down and create without pressure. You also remind yourself that your emotions matter and that you deserve time to rest and reflect.
This small art practice builds emotional resilience. The more we care for ourselves, the more we can handle life’s ups and downs with grace.

A Student's Story
Here’s what one of our participants, Madeleine Adamson from Canada, had to say about the course:
““Cynthia’s ‘Mindful Mandalas Course’ and writing process allowed me, for the first time, to understand my marks and go deeper with my creative expression. I’ve been making Mindful Mandalas daily as a way to visually journal and ‘check-in’ with myself. I’m amazed at how much better I feel in such a short period of time, and I have a sweet collection of mandalas growing. This is by far my favorite Mindful Art practice Cynthia has shared. So simple, yet deep. I can’t recommend this Course enough!””
Why Mandalas Help Us Heal
Mandalas are circles that symbolize wholeness and balance. They’ve been used for centuries in different cultures. The circular shape feels calming and safe. It also reflects the cycles of life and growth.
When you create inside a circle, you naturally turn inward. It becomes a mirror for your emotions and thoughts. This process can bring clarity and peace. You might feel lighter, more grounded, or inspired after even a short session.
In the Mindful Mandalas Course, you’ll learn how to use this circle format to manage stress, reflect on emotions, and grow your mindfulness skills; all through simple, creative steps.
