How to Listen to Your Inner Creative Muse and Embrace Your Authentic Expression

Have you ever felt a gentle nudge from within, urging you to create, explore, or express yourself? That quiet voice is your Inner Creative Muse, guiding you back to your authentic creative flow. This post shares practices, tools, and stories to help you reconnect with that inner voice and express your creativity with ease.

New Video: Meditating Through Art with Body Scan Drawings

Art can be a powerful tool for mindfulness. In my latest video, I demonstrate two ways to meditate through art using body scan drawings. This simple practice combines creative expression with presence, helping you release tension and connect with how your body feels in the moment.

Body scan drawings offer a calming way to check in with yourself and ease into creative flow. There’s no right or wrong way to do it—just observe, feel, and draw what arises.

If the video supports your practice, I’d love to hear what resonates with you in the comments.

A Story of Creative Transformation

Previously, I was co-creating with a small art group. One participant, frustrated with her abstract painting, said,

“I want to throw it in the trash where it belongs.”

With gentle encouragement and an invitation to try some free mark-making, something shifted. Her body softened. Her energy changed. By the end of our time together, she smiled and said,

“This is fun.”

This reminded me how important curiosity and compassion are when we feel creatively blocked. The Inner Critic might be loud, but our Muse is always there too, ready to emerge when we give it space.

9 Ways to Be More Creative with Mindful Art

In another blog post, I share 9 ways to be more creative with mindful art journaling. These ideas are easy to try and can help you connect more deeply with your creative expression. A few favorites:

  • Let go of perfectionism. Focus on the process, not the final product.

  • Create without expectations. Use your journal as a space to explore, not perform.

  • Be curious, not critical. Invite wonder instead of judgment.

These practices support you in embracing both the Inner Muse and the Inner Critic, allowing both to have space, but choosing curiosity as your guide.

Embrace Your Creative Journey

Whether it’s through mindful art practices, creative resources, or connecting with your community, every step you take helps you listen more deeply to your Inner Creative Muse. You don’t need to wait for the perfect time to begin, just start where you are, with what you have.

Try a body scan drawing. Write a few intuitive words in your journal. Sit in silence and breathe. Whatever your practice, let it be gentle, supportive, and true to you.

Creativity lives inside you. All it needs is space to unfold.
